How to Get a Free Credit Report

With an increased amount of focus being placed on credit awareness in recent years, the United States government instituted a plan enabling every American to have free access to a credit report once each year. Though this may seem very cut and dry, there are some steps that consumers must take to ensure that they are really getting those credit reports for free instead of paying around ten dollars for each one.

There are three major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion) which keep a hold of your most valuable information. In accordance to the law, consumers are allowed to get one credit report each year from all three of these agencies. How you space out those reports is up to you. Some people choose to get all three at one time in order to make comparisons, while others like to get each at a different time to keep a constant check over their credit. If you are very active in your credit use, then it is probably a good idea to space these out as much as possible.

The interesting catch is that you won’t receive these credit reports automatically. It is quite the contrary, actually. You will have to jump through a couple of hoops in order to get a hold of your credit score and the other aspects that a credit report might keep tabs on. In order to request a free credit report, one must do one of three things.

The first way to request a free credit report is to go to Annual Credit Report, the trusted and responsible source for all consumers. There, you will be able to input information in an easy to follow format and you’ll be sure not to get scammed by the credit agencies.

Another way to request a free credit report is to call (877) 322-8228. Dialing this number will take you down a similar path as heading to the listed website above and can be a better option for people who aren’t exactly internet savvy. If you prefer dealing with someone over the phone as opposed to looking at a computer screen, then this is the way to go.

The third way to request a credit report for free is probably the most difficult and time consuming. You must first keep a hold of the Annual Credit Report Request brochure, which is mailed out every year. From there, you must fill out each part of requested information on the back of the brochure and mail it to the Annual Credit Report Service at P.O. Box 105281 in Atlanta, GA 30348. If you don’t have that brochure, be sure to visit the Federal Trade Commission website.

Because many people are searching the internet to find their free credit information, some scammers have come along looking to take advantage of the opportunity. In order to protect yourself against these folks, it’s important to only give out information to the sources listed above. These people are looking to protect you and enable you to access the very important information held within your credit report. Other online sources might only be looking to trick you into signing up for a paid credit report, though.
